Reptiles stars of show-and-tell

The aim was to educate the public on the habitat loss and threat of extinction that faces many reptile species as well as to promote conservation and appreciation for them.

Reptile fanatics, Annie Lambert and Hanri Lourens of Southport had an enjoyable day, as they shared their knowledge, held talks and displayed various reptile species at Sebenza Village, Ramsgate last Saturday.

Ms Lourens said the talk was not only for reptile lovers, but to educate the public on the habitat loss and threat of extinction that faces many reptile species as well as to promote conservation and appreciation for them.

“A reptile is any amniote that is neither a mammal nor a bird, is cold-blooded, has scales or scutes and can lay eggs on land. Scutes are the thick bony or horny plates which form the dermal layer of such reptiles like turtles and crocodiles,” explained Ms Lambert.

She added there are more than 10 000 species of reptiles. “They include, to name a few, turtles, terrapins, tortoises, lizards, snakes, crocodiles and alligators.
