The former mayor and speaker of Ugu District Municipality, Sthembiso Cele, died on Thursday evening, May 28, following an illness.
During his tenure as mayor, Cele played a pivotal role in advancing development and strengthening local governance. Among the landmark projects realised under his leadership was the establishment and launch of the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre which continues to benefit communities across the district today.
Cele was sworn in as speaker on June 10, 2011, a position he held until August 2016 before taking a decision to retire from frontline politics. In his role as speaker, he championed democratic governance, accountability and constructive engagement with council.
Throughout his years of service, he remained passionate about improving the lives of communities through infrastructure development, empowerment and responsive governance. His contribution to the growth and development of Ugu leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
The mayor of Ugu, Clr Sikhumbuzo Mqadi on behalf of council extends his condolences to the Cele family, friends, colleagues, traditional leaders and all those whose lives were touched by his leadership and dedicated service to the people of Ugu.
