Hibberdene Happenings: Sassa workers rally in spite of challenges

Several computers were stolen during a break-in at the Sassa offices in Turton last week, making it very difficult for staff.

SEVERAL computers were stolen during a break-in at the Sassa offices in Turton last week, making it very difficult for those trying to deal with the multitude of applicants which seem to arrive on a daily basis. Your scribe was there last Thursday and was eventually attended to, in spite of a long wait. Many thanks to those who worked in adverse circumstances to help people.

Happy holidays

School holidays are upon us once again and all pupils and teachers are wished a relaxing and happy break, with safe travelling wished to those using the roads over this busy period. Similarly, it is hoped that all dads were thoroughly spoilt on Father’s Day last Sunday.

Good response

Ken Walker reports that bookings for the Oribi Winter Camp from July 4 to 7 have now closed. A record number of teenagers will be attending the camp, which has resulted in an extra taxi having to be hired to accommodate the increased numbers. If anyone would like to contribute a monetary donation, no matter how small, they are most welcome to contact Ken at 082 3790656.

Pop in

Umdoni Retirement Village will hold its Winter Craft Market this coming Saturday, June 22. Over 40 stalls will offer wonderful hand-crafted items and artworks and as a bonus, Collins Collection will bring a selection of women’s clothing and Selvie Pillay has promised new stock. Come along and enjoy breakfast or tea and eats at the coffee shop adjoining the hall. All stands are indoors, so weather won’t be a problem. Doors open at 8am and traders usually pack up by noon. For more information, contact Heather Butler at 076 5418610.

Great fete

A fete will be held at the angling club’s premises from about 9am on Saturday, June 29, and all are most welcome to attend. All the usual flea market stalls will be available and a variety of delicious food will be on offer, so come early and stay for something to eat. Tables will be available for hire at R50 and contact numbers will be provided next week.

Fond farewell

Several members of the Methodist congregation, as well as ministers from other churches within the circuit and visiting dignitaries attended a lovely, poignant farewell service for Reverend Martin and Nicole Beukes at church last Sunday afternoon.

Moving tributes paid to Reverend Martin showed the high esteem in which he is held and the congregation is indeed sorry to see him go.

He will be taking up a post in Reading, England, and is wished everything of the best in his new position. The women excelled as usual, and the eats were out of this world.

Congratulations

Conspicuous by his absence in the line-up of visiting ministers was Pastor Michael Scheepers of Port Shepstone Methodist Church, who had married the lovely Kathlene Evans on Saturday. The couple is wished a very happy and blessed life together.

Get well soon

Elmari van Rooy was involved in a car accident at the Seaslopes Road traffic lights last Friday, just five weeks after her grandparents Marie and Willie van Rensburg were involved in a similar accident. She was badly bruised and shaken up and her car is damaged. She is wished a speedy, complete recovery.

Lions learn

Lions from all over KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and even as far as Gauteng, gathered at the Sappi Skills Centre in Umkomaas last Saturday, for a series of workshops for incoming office bearers, new members and any other Lions who wanted to keep up to date.

District Governor Lyn Botha presents the Lions Clubs International Centennial Service Challenge 100 award to Lion Brian Porteous of Hibberdene.

At the closing session, District Governor Lyn Botha handed out the various clubs’ awards in the Lions Clubs International Centennial Service Challenge 100 for 2018/19. Local Lions, president Sue Smuts Steyn, Lionel Goliath, Brian Porteous and Steve Coulson attended.

Much-anticipated

Several locals will take part and are eagerly awaiting the fun annual Grandparents’ Walk in Uvongo on Wednesday, July 3. Hopefully the event will be a super successful one this year.

Thoughts and prayers

Felicity Howe continues to receive treatment at Hibiscus Private Hospital and thoughts and prayers are with Greer and Doug Henderson, as they go through this stressful time with his mom. Sadly, Mona Steyn died recently after not being well for quite some time. She will be missed by many and condolences go to her husband Johan and all her family members.

Raise a glass

Birthday wishes for the week go to Sarie Bruwer (21st), Martie Broodryk (22nd) and Petro Wiid and Frances Raymond on June 24.

Thankfully the Winter Solstice occurs this week, hopefully heralding longer days and shorter nights. Your scribe cannot wait for warmer weather and hot days on the South Coast. Remember to keep Lizzie busy with Hibberdene news and snippets.
