Sod turned for housing project

Five hundred houses will be built as part of the project, with each house comprising two bedrooms, an open plan lounge and kitchen, ceiling board finish, electric wiring, a VIP toilet and water storage.

THE sod-turning ceremony to mark phase two of the Amahlongwa rural housing project took place on Wednesday last week.

The event, in the Gugulabasha and Danyana areas, was attended by Umdoni mayor, Thabani Dube, as well as councillors from Wards 16 and 18.

According to the municipality, this project will create about 150 ‘temporal’ job opportunities for those in the Umdoni area and will use local service providers as sub-contractors.

“The Msomi and Memela families expressed their gratitude for this life-changing development,” said Umdoni Municipality communications officer, Zime Gcaba.

Gqolweni Road in Ward 18 under construction.

After the sod-turning, a site inspection was done for phase two of the 3.5km Gqolweni Road project in Ward 18.

The municipality hoped to complete this road by November this year.

The project was progressing well, the municipality said, with more than three kilometres of this road already under asphalt.
