The event aims to help raise funds for very sick local youngster Ashton Dry, the youngest son of Nicki and Kevin Dry of Umtamvuna River Lodge. Ashton has leukemia and desperately needs blood donors for his treatment. For more details, contact Roshie at 082 5584796.

Busy weekend

Ramsay Gardens in Port Edward hosted a lovely ‘Spring Special’ all-day breakfast last weekend. Many locals converged on the popular restaurant and enjoyed the perfect warm, sunny weather. Members of two local garden clubs made the most of the special deal and enjoyed a relaxed breakfast while swapping plants.

Denise Englebrecht (left), Maureen Kruger (middle) and Denise Brass kicked off spring at the enjoyable September 1 event held at Ramsey Gardens in Port Edward last Sunday.

The musical mother and son duo comprising Josh Foster and his mom Delwyn travelled from Mooi River to perform their unique style of gypsy folk music. ‘Muddy and the Mothership’ are popular performers on the Midlands Meander route. A number of stalls also attracted a fair share of browsers.

Make a date

Pro Deo women will offer free grooming and health monitoring services for the elderly tomorrow (Thursday) – as usual on the first Thursday of every month, from 8 to 10am. Pensioners pop into the Methodist Church hall and get a haircut or pedicure from friendly, caring assistants.

Don’t forget the Morning Market this coming Saturday at the Methodist Church in Port Edward. Crafters will display their wares and cooks will provide breakfast and pancakes for tea from 8.30am till noon. It’s always a fun social meeting place.

Bowlers gather

The fourth annual LSC 2-4-2 mixed pairs tournament took place over three days last week. This year 112 bowlers entered this popular tournament organised very capably by Janet and Boy Venter.

Entrants travelled from as far afield as Mossel Bay, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.

Matches were played at Banners Rest, Port Edward, Munster and Southbroom bowling clubs. Great fun, laughter and camaraderie was had by all. A big thank you goes to sponsors McEden Nuts, Ric Roy Trust, Barry Payn and Rob Lyle.

Overall winners were Helen Proctor and Tony Waters from Southbroom Bowling Club. Runners-up were Brian Douthwaite and Dora Vosloo from Margate Country Club.

Spring is definitely in the air. Although in South Africa we do not have extreme changes of season like most other parts of the world, there is a definite change in the air. Starlings are swarming with their cute little twitters and night jars and reed frogs have made themselves quite evident.

Nature is bursting at the seams and the good 30mm rains enjoyed last week has spread its magic over thirsty lawns and flowerbeds.

All news to Philippa.
