It is believed the couple had been en route to an EFF gathering ahead of the upcoming ward 5 by-election on November 6.
Speaking to the Herald, the party’s regional secretary Mpume Mbono said he had been travelling in convoy with the Ndwalanes at the time.
“They stopped. We continued with our journey, but I soon realised I could no longer see them behind me. I then received a call informing me that they had had an accident.”
The bereaved family said they were in disbelief.
“I can image her walking through the door to tell us this was just a nightmare,” said Mrs Ndwalane’s sister, Snenhlanhla Shozi. According to the family, Mrs Ndwalane was warm at heart, loved her family and working for her community.
“Her children, aged between one and 12 years, are now without a mother,” said the distraught Snenhlanhla.
Mr Ndwalane is believed to be in a critical condition in hospital.
The EFF sent its condolences to the family.
“Fighter Slindile was a very dedicated person who worked tirelessly and committed all her time in ensuring the growth of EFF in the Ugu Region.
“This is not only a loss for her family but for the entire EFF community. May her spirit never fade away but continue to live amongst all fighters.”
