Umtamvuna Views: No load-shedding appeases rugby fans

Streets were deserted for 80 minutes while fans were glued to their Tv screens.

Eskom managed to avoid a serious, countrywide riot last Saturday when it decided to succumb to pressure over the planned load-shedding scheduled at midday. The scheduled quarter final match of the Rugby World Cup was due to kick off at 12.15pm and rugby fans were in a frenzy with the prospect of being denied viewing of the grand clash between the Springboks and the very strong Japanese team.

Power stayed on and streets were deserted for 80 minutes while fans were glued to their Tv screens. Our boys came out tops with Japan putting up a very strong fight, especially in the first half. World Cup fever has grabbed thousands of SA citizens across the board. Who cares about race, religion or creed as long as we all shout “Go Bokke”.

Take note

As a community gesture, GP Security has three guards on foot patrol in Port Edward. Criminals appear to be reasonably quiet, but that does not mean we can become complacent.

Fishermen should be aware that shad season is closed. From October 1 to December 1, shad take a holiday and relax their guard for two months while they are safe from local rock fishermen.

Attention all bowlers: There’s only a few more weeks to wait to play your favourite game. Most local greens have been closed for spring treatments, but will soon open with lovely new green grass.

Port Edward has been chosen as the host town for the annual SATM Bike Fest.

This exciting event will take place next year from April 25-27 and looks to be one of the biggest financial and tourist related events hosted in our town.

Fitting tribute

Last Friday saw the memorial service of Lyn Wichmann take place at the Methodist Church, with the wake held afterwards at Port Edward Country Club. Some estimated there were 500 guests at the function and cars were jam-packed all over the grounds. It was a great tribute to a wonderful, long-standing resident who died suddenly from a suspected heart attack.
