OPINION: ‘KwaLatshoda residents definitely deserve to own their homes’

Council does not even seem to know who the legal occupants of the homes are.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ray Nkonyeni is very disappointed that the ANC in council voted against a motion by Councillor Stephanie Breedt talking about the title deeds of people living in KwaLatshoda, close to Leisure Bay.

After ten years, residents of this area still do not have ownership of their homes and council does not even seem to know who the legal occupants of the homes are as the results of an audit has not been forthcoming.

Residents deserve to own their homes legally and finally and I will not just accept the council vote of 36 against, by the ruling party that does not answer to the pleas of residents of Kwalatshoda.

The DA has long maintained that what is needed in South Africa is not changing the constitution to allow for land distribution without compensation, but for the government to give title deeds to people to give them ownership of the land, belonging to government, that they live on.

The DA will now write to the MEC of Human Settlements to ask for her department’s intervention.

The time for excuses is over; it is time to put the people first.

The DA will continue to fight for all residents of this municipality.
