50-year reunion was a nostalgic affair

Past pupils of Port Shepstone State Indian High's Class of 1969 gathered at Margate Hotel recently.

It was an evening to remember for the past pupils of Port Shepstone State Indian High class of 1969 when they celebrated their 50th reunion at the Margate Hotel recently.

The event was conceived when a small group of ex-pupils met up at a local coffee shop to commemorate their 50th reunion. The idea took hold, and before they knew it an informal committee had been convened who was soon inundated with requests to attend the event by many ex scholars of the 60s, who were part of this close-knit school community. The event was called ‘A Journey through the 60s.’

Past pupil and one of the organisers, Ronnie Nair, said the event was a huge success. Set to the music of the 60s, pupils reminisced about their experiences, difficulties and successes.

“Last Saturday was a unique day for about 80 ex-pupils and their partners who attended the reunion. Being graduates of the then Port Shepstone State Indian High School we celebrated our respective journey through the 60s. The coming together of a huge number of past pupils, from throughout South Africa and abroad, surprised the organisers Steven Reddy, Ramesh Rampersad and myself. Most had the unusual experience of seeing their former colleagues for the first time in half a century. The exceptional success of rekindling relations has put pressure on the organisers to convene another gathering in the not too distant future,” said Mr Nair.

It was a night of reminiscing for everyone, covering aspects of an era that affected their lives – from people to music, to the lunar landing and the first heart operation that took place. The music and the conversations certainly made it a night to remember.
