Tuesday Rostrum members were encouraged to change their mindsets and embrace doing good for other people.

Tuesday Rostrum’s October guest speaker, Imran Mohammed, project coordinator for Gift of the Givers Foundation KZN South Coast, took his audience on an interesting journey behind the scenes of the projects administered by this, the largest disaster NGO of African origin on the continent.

Mr Mohammed, who is a key member of the foundation, gave an interesting and informative overview of the work undertaken by the organisation, which has been offering unconditional humanitarian aid since 1992, irrespective of race, religion, political affiliation or geographical boundaries.

Millions of people in some 43 countries have benefited from the lifesaving aid offered by Gift of the Givers in the form of search and rescue teams, medical personnel, equipment and supplies, food, water, clothing and temporary shelter, he said.

“We get so caught up in life that we tend to forget there are people out there who have nothing. The cycle of poverty in our country is tragic.

“Our mindsets need to change and we need to embrace doing good for other people.”

Locally, the organisation has spent R4-million on various projects on the KZN South Coast, with volunteers working closely with communities at grassroots level.

“Background work on a project is back-breaking work, but we get the job done thanks to those who have contributed in some meaningful way, from ordinary South Africans to government and corporates,” he said.

Mr Mohammed left guests with a final thought.

“Give with a good heart but most importantly, give with dignity,” he encouraged.

Rostrum’s Christmas lunch ‘Christmas with a Twist’ takes place at Mbango Valley on November 26.

The next Tuesday Rostrum meeting is at Mbango Valley on November 12 at noon.
