D-Day for Port Edward’s Ashton Dry

The family is asking for support in the form of prayers.

Wednesday, November 13 is a red-letter day for the Dry family of Port Edward.

It’s the day Ashton, who turned 12 on Tuesday this week, will undergo a stem cell transplant in a bid to help him fight aggressive acute myeloid leukaemia.

Treatment preparations have been scheduled for November 4, after a nine out 10 match was found in Germany.

The chances of finding a match from someone unrelated to the patient are very slim – only one in 100 000.

The donor will fly to Pretoria where they procedure will take place.

Ashton’s mother, Nicole said that as there was a high risk of relapse with childhood leukemia, a stem cell transplant was Ashton’s best option, giving him a 75 percent chance of being cured.

“Although I’m in shock and not really prepared for this I have to believe it’s somewhat of a birthday miracle.

“I’m asking our community to hold us up in prayer over the next two weeks to ensure Ash stays well and strong.

“In the months to come, we will also need prayers for this to be a huge success,” she said.
