There was much jubilation and relief as seven small scale South Coast fishing co-operatives recently received 15-year fishing rights.
This was announced by the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Barbara Creecy.

Speaking to the fishermen at Sihlonyaneni community hall in Mthwalume, Ms Creecy said she was aware of the struggle faced while the licences were awaited, but added it was good to know that they would now be fishing legally.
“Some 467 people from the co-operatives have benefited.”
Ms Creecy said she was also happy that this project would also allow women to put food on the table.
“The other good news is that KZN Department of Economic Development and Tourism and the Department of Environmental Affairs have approved the building of 11 factories, one of which will be built in this village. This means you will fish and process your catch here, which will also create jobs.”

Umzumbe Municipality’s acting mayor, Londolo Zungu said she was overjoyed at the news.
“These people you see selling fish and crayfish on the main road are working for their children. We understand job opportunities are scare and they make living out of fishing.
“We are delighted they will be able to support their families. It been a long journey, but we are thankful the dream of many years has finally become a reality.”
