Hibberdene Happenings: Storm damaged road becomes a nightmare

The week’s rain was most welcome and has no doubt helped to fill up drought-parched dams in many areas around Hibberdene. Soft and soaking, the rain doesn’t seem to have caused as much damage as on previous occasions, although already damaged roads and dreaded potholes seem to be getting worse.

Unfortunately it resulted in Mtwalume’s flea and craft market, rescheduled for last Saturday, being cancelled and organisers have decided not to postpone it to a date in November, but rather hold it in December. As soon as your scribe becomes aware of the new date, details will be included in this column, so keep a lookout.

Visits and voyagers

Fienie Roslee of Mtwalume recently returned from her visit to the UK and America, just in time to bid bon voyage to her friend Ina Jansen van Vuuren, also from Mtwalume, who left for the USA this week. Ina will be spending time with her daughter Hanlie and her husband Marty Steres in Phoenix, Arizona, in an area known as Surprize. She will be away for over a month and is wished a wonderful holiday.

Your scribe’s son Greg from Witbank left for Dhanbad, India, this week and will spend about 10 days there, having previously worked in the area for a year about two years ago. He described the town, situated in the coal-mining area of India as the ‘filthiest place’ he has ever worked in. A redeeming feature is that the town is fairly close to Varanasi, whose temples and artefacts featured in the recent Tv programme ‘Voetspore … India’.

Jean Flint’s daughter Angela, from Ireland, has been visiting her mom for the past couple of weeks and is due to return home over the weekend.

It is hoped she enjoyed her time in Hibberdene. Nicholas de Beer has returned home after helping his gran Barbara Sates recuperate after a recent stay in hospital. It is good to see Barbara up and about again and she described Nicholas as ‘an absolute godsend’, coping with all sorts of things while she has been incapacitated.

Hibberdene bade farewell to Norma Boardman last week. Norma and her late husband Earle lived in Hibberdene for many years and she will be greatly missed. She was well-known for her beautiful children’s ‘camouflage’ outfits which she made and sold at flea markets up and down the coast. She will stay in Pretoria for a few months before moving to her new home in East London and is wished everything of the best.

Don’t forget

Methodists, have you sorted out your jumble for the grand sale on November 30 yet? It will run from 8.30am to 12 noon and all good quality used goods will be most welcome – the more, the merrier. And all congregants are invited to attend the service on December 8, which will hopefully be conducted by the new minister Reverend Annelie Kotze. As an added bonus, a police choir will perform during the service, so it should be a most entertaining and rewarding experience – one not to be missed.

Phyllis Michaelis is suffering from assorted aches and pains and is not feeling very well at all. Please remember her in your thoughts and prayers, as well as all others not feeling a hundred percent at present. The only two birthdays this week are those of Issie du Plessis (21st) and Joey Kotze (25th).
