Uvongo road is a danger zone
Things have spiralled out of control. Eskom boxes have been turned over, vandalized and left open for some unfortunate child to stick its fingers in and receive a fatal shock.
It seems that almost overnight trenches are dug and dangerous live wires are left exposed along Alamein Road in Uvongo.

Resident Martine Blackler, who uses the road every day said there is no way in or out of Peter Road, as there are huge Eskom cables left lying over Alamein Road.
“Things have spiralled out of control. Eskom boxes have been turned over, vandalised and left open for some unfortunate child to stick its fingers in and receive a fatal shock. There is a huge trench which has been dug from the midsection of Alamein Road right to the edge of it becoming Peter Road,” she said.
Ms Blackler added that the plinth under the substation, has been ripped apart, and cables are now protruding from that box as well.
She said she has received no response from Eskom, despite reporting it repeatedly.
“I have more reference numbers than Trump has headaches. The crime line sms does not function. The so-called Eskom customer care line also does not function. I was told there is no longer any live wiring in any of those boxes. Why then have several long gouges been dug into Alamein Road with an angle grinder? To connect to what? If there is no power, why bother?”
Another resident told the Herald that this happens weekly, and the boxes should be permanently removed.
Ms Blackler said to make matters worse trees were placed across the road last week to prevent residents from accessing their driveways.
Simon April, the spokesman of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, said this is an Eskom matter, and it is best they respond.
“We can, however, as part of government discourage people from resorting to illegal connections, as this is not only regarded as theft but also poses a risk, as live electric wires are not properly protected as required,” he said.
Eskom responded by saying it would investigate the matter.
