CRAT recruiting dynamic community members
The team intends confronting issues head-on with responsible authorities and holding key roleplayers accountable to the public.
A group of concerned businessmen and ratepayers joined forces recently to form the Community and Ratepayers Action Team (CRAT).
Headed by Basil Lanka of Lazer Security, a task team has been set up to liaise with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) to address the serious regression of Port Shepstone and the surrounding residential areas in the district.

The action team which consists of businessmen, ratepayers and community members met with RNM chief whip, Selvan Chetty on Tuesday evening.
“We are currently recruiting dynamic members of the community that will represent the masses in the RNM district. We want you to join us in mediating with the municipality in helping identify and finding solutions to the many problems facing our town. We intend to give the residents of the area a clean and crime-free environment in which to live,” said Mr Lanka.
The team intends confronting issues head-on with responsible authorities and holding key roleplayers accountable to the public. In doing so the group hopes to achieve workable solutions with these government organisations.
Some of CRAT’s main concerns are :
1) The increase in crime especially, in the Port Shepstone CBD, due to the lack of visible policing from Saps and law enforcement officers.
2) Delayed or no emergency response from Saps or law enforcement officers.
3) Filth, littering and illegal dumping, especially on the beaches, and in the parks and gardens.
4) Inadequate maintenance of stormwater drains, potholes, unkempt verges, and poor or no street lighting.
5) Vagrants that roam the streets squatting at will.
6) The sale and use of drugs.
7) Unsightly buildings.
8) Frequent disruptions in power and water.
9) The blatant disregard of road traffic regulations especially in the CBD that results in congestion and chaos.
10) Traffic lights are constantly out of order, with no traffic official on duty.
