Margate Moves: Margate scribe Val will be missed

For almost 30 years, the Herald’s neighbourhood news scribe, Val Korb, has kept readers informed about what’s happening in Margate, Ramsgate and Southbroom. Sadly, Val died suddenly in Newcastle last Wednesday night.

She was visiting her son Paul and daughter-in-law Sandy when she collapsed. Many will remember Val as the ‘Face of Margate’ from her many years with Margate Publicity Association (now part of Ugu South Coast Tourism) where she worked at the beach office.

A hairdresser by profession, Val and her late husband Gordon moved to the South Coast in 1990 to retire. She went to help out at the publicity office for a few days while staff attended the Indaba in Durban. She did such an amazing ‘fort holding’ job that she was offered a permanent position. She absolutely loved her ‘retirement’ job and spent the next 17 years there.

Former Herald editor, Linda Hooper, asked Val to be the neighbourhood news scribe shortly after she joined the association and she has been faithfully sending in her weekly column ever since. She leaves behind three children, daughter Colleen Haggard ( former editor of the Herald), sons Michael and Paul, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Be merry

Fabulous live music from ‘The Legends’, Christmas carols and songs by the choir, festive fare from the ‘stollen bakers’, speciality stalls and fun activities for little people are all on offer at Southbroom Tennis Club’s traditional Christmas Market.

Head out to Eyles Park (next to the tennis courts) in Captain Smith Road this Sunday (15th), from 4.30pm. One of the highlights will be the lighting of the tree. Food and drinks will be available as well.

Mardi Gras magic

The holidays are here and that means Mardi Gras street party fun. There are four in Marine Drive, Margate, on the 11th, 18th, 23rd and 30th from 6pm. Great vibe and good shopping. For more info, phone 072 5614854.

Visit Santa

Sebenza Village in Ramsgate has its own Santa Post Office where children can drop off letters to Father Christmas. They can also have their photograph taken with Santa, take part in fun activities such as egg races, face painting, musical chairs and cupcake decorating and there will also be daily competitions offering great prizes. For good old-fashioned family festive fun, visit the village from December 9 to 22.

Save the dates

Southbroom Ratepayers’ Association and Property Owners’ Forum will hold its AGM at the golf club next Saturday (21st) from 9am. Ratepayers are urged to attend this important meeting.

Another Southbroom happening is the Heritage Walk with Libby Cochrane on the 18th from 8am to 9.30am. Booking is essential. Phone Dawne Murray at 083 7032171.

Holiday fun events take place at Ramsgate beach on the 23rd, 24th and 27th and Margate beach on the 28th and 29th.

The red carpet is rolled out for Craig Snyman from Australia who is visiting his Ramsgate family. And bon voyage to Joan Korb from Margate who jets off to Dubai this week.
