Illegal firearms taken off the streets in Umzinto

The firearms will undergo ballistic tests to confirm if they have been used in the commission of any crimes.

Police in the mid-South Coast recently made several arrests in connection with illegal firearm and ammunition possession.

Umzinto Saps Task Team members were on a stop-and-search patrol in the Umzinto CBD on October 17 when they observed a suspicious-looking man with a weapon in the waistband of his pants. It was then established that the 48-year-old man was carrying a 9mm pistol and 11 rounds of ammunition. He was promptly arrested.

On the same day, police arrested a 37-year-old man near the Isonti area, Umzinto. When police searched him, they recovered a homemade firearm as well as 11 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile, Scottburgh Saps Crime Prevention made arrests for illegal firearms on October 16. Members responded to information regarding illegal firearms and proceeded to an identified house in the Ndunduna area in KwaCele. Here, they arrested a 44-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. A 9mm pistol was recovered with the serial number filed off, as well as five live rounds.

On the lower South Coast, members of Saps Port Shepstone Crime Prevention were patrolling Main Harding Road in Murchison and noticed a vehicle parked with four men facing oncoming traffic. A search was conducted, and a CZ pistol with two rounds was recovered

All suspects will appear in local courts on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They will be profiled to determine if they are sought in any other criminal cases. The firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to confirm if they have been used in the commission of any crimes.
