Hibberdene Happenings: Christmas parties in full swing

Christmas parties seem to be the order of the day and both the Hibberdene Bowling Club and the Blue Waters’ Thursday social group held theirs recently, despite inclement weather and load shedding. Let’s hope Eskom sticks to its promise to avoid load shedding between now and the end of the festive season.

Festive vibes
Convenor Sue Paterson reports that, although quieter than normal, Saturday’s flea and craft market at Mtwalume had a lovely, festive vibe and went off very well. The new stallholders reported for duty, and this can only bode well for the future. Resident musician, Andy Els and his wife Dianna were presented with a set of placemats and a Christmas apron in appreciation of all the hours he has given to providing music for the year’s markets. The markets will be in recess until February.
Christmas cakes
Remember to get your Lions’ Christmas cake from either Salon Marguerite, or the clinic on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Time is running out, so make sure you buy it and brandy it in time for Christmas.
Holidaymakers are here
What an awful week! Load shedding, days of continued rain and almost gale-force winds over the weekend!
It does not, however, seem to have deterred holidaymakers, who have flocked to the coast in their numbers. Businesses are crowded and a lovely busy vibe can be felt in the town.
Massive blow
Whether caused by the recent attempted theft of the vehicle or not, disaster struck the Coulsons last Wednesday afternoon when the fuse box and wiring to the back area of the vehicle caught alight and burnt out, rendering it impossible to use until the insurance has investigated the matter thoroughly. It is a massive blow and couldn’t have come at a worse time.
Happy holidays
Shortly after the visit of her daughter, Angela Sharp and grandson Matthew from Ireland, Jean Flint is once again being spoilt, this time by a visit from her son, Paul Morgan from Australia. Paul always whisks his mom off to an exquisite Drakensberg hotel during his annual visit, and this year was no exception. It is hoped they had a wonderful time whilst in the ‘Berg’.
Your scribe’s granddaughter Shannon Coulson, from Witbank, arrived home on Sunday on a short visit from the UK where she is attending the University of Bristol. She will be at home for a couple of weeks and is wished a lovely holiday.
Christmas services
All others planning a holiday away are wished a wonderful time, with good travelling and a safe return. Christmas day services will be held at the Methodist Church at 8.30am and Mizpah Church at 9am, and all are welcome to attend.
Thoughts and prayers
Deepest sympathy is extended to former Herald editor, Colleen Haggard whose mom, Margate scribe Val Korb, died on December 4th. She will be lovingly remembered.
The high esteem in which Barbara Sates was held was evident at her wake held at the Blue Waters Pub and Grill last Friday evening. A huge crowd of family and friends paid tribute to Barbara, who will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for a long time to come.

Celebrating birthdays this week are Mike Phungula, Phil Smal, your scribe, and the Herald’s Shannon Trollip and Zimasa Mgwili (18th); Judy Mays and Sue Gunther (20th); Olive Eicker (21st); Cindy Farmer (22nd); and Joan Snyman (23rd), while Johnny and Charmagne Howe and Johnny and Elodie Hook celebrate anniversaries on the 21st. Celebrating between Christmas and New Year are Chris Hillman (25th); Lee-Anne Botha, Geoff York and John Hoyer (26th); Hein Balzer (28th); Johan van Niekerk (29th); Freddie Redelinghaus and Phillip van der Merwe (30th); Jossie Bartleman and Tom Kent (31st) while Margaret and Charlie Smith celebrate their anniversary on December 30th.
