Margate Moves: ‘Tis the season to be (very) merry
As this is the last neighbourhood news column for the year, all readers are wished a merry Christmas and a happy 2020.
LOCALS and visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to having fun this festive season. There are lots of great events for the whole family taking place over the next two weeks. Unfortunately, the weather has not played along, so far, but sunny days are forecast and everyone is urged to get out and enjoy the holiday happenings.

First up is the Margate Mardi Gras Night Market. It will be held tonight (18th) on Marine Drive from 6pm. Markets will also be held on the 23rd and 30th. For more information, phone 072 5614854.
Rainbow run
Young and old can win fantastic prizes at the `Beach Colour Bash’ hosted by the Southbroom Conservancy. Walk or run along the shoreline, while being blasted with coloured powder. It takes place at Southbroom Beach this Thursday (19th). Registration is from 2pm and the colour race starts at 3pm.
Trail’s up
For nature lovers, the conservancy has planned a walk through the Frederika Preserve. Botanist, Anne Skelton, who is also the conservancy’s president will lead the three-kilometre trail and explain the flora and fauna en route. The date to diarise is this Friday (20th) from 9am. The departure point will depend on wind conditions. Booking is essential. Phone Anne at 082 8967814.
Bagpipes and carols
The quaint village of Trafalgar will once again stage another Community Christmas Market. The venue is Mountbatten Square from 10am to 3pm this Saturday (21st). The market is a fund-raiser for the Mpenjati Conservancy. For details phone Tania at 073 5002289 or Teresa at 073 9422332.
Sing out loud
For an old-fashioned evening of carol singing get to Eyles Park in Southbroom (next to the tennis courts) this Sunday (22nd) for `Carols in the Park’ from 5.30pm – 8.30pm.
Take along chairs and a picnic supper. Carollers will be led by Wade Marshall and it is rumoured that Santa is going to put in a brief appearance as well.
Summer sizzle
Ugu South Coast Tourism’s `Summer Sizzle’ offering great fun activities and giveaways will hit Ramsgate beach this weekend (21 and 22) with Tiago’s Activator events from 10am to 2pm. The action then moves to Margate beach on the 23rd, 24th, 28th and 29th, from 10am to 2pm. The One Way Christmas Truck will visit Margate suburbs on the 23rd between 5pm and 6pm.
Good vibrations
Ramsgate’s iconic music venue, Rocky Ridge, has assembled a fantastic line-up of performers this season. There’s a Bob Dylan tribute featuring Oscar Swanlund on the 20th (12pm), other gigs include `Chewing the Hornet’ on the 21st, `Jacob’s Saw’ 22nd, and `Calico’ (27th). There’s also a fabulous New Year’s Eve party on offer featuring the red hot outfit `Radiorush’. Doors open at 8pm on the 31st. Phone 072 4736095 for more info about the gigs.
More music
Acoustic guitar master, Tony Cox, will be at Riverbend Crocodile Farm, this Saturday (21st) from 7pm. His repertoire will highlight songs from his acclaimed `Enormous Flowers’ album. Tickets are limited – call Hayley at 078 4447130 to book.
Big bash
Southbroom beach will once again host the South Coast’s big New Year’s Eve bash. Gates open at 6pm and revellers will welcome 2020 in sensational party style with deejay Chunda Munki. Strictly for over 18s only. Tickets available from Web Tickets.
AGM time
On a more serious note – the Southbroom Ratepayers’ Association and Property Owners’ Forum will hold its annual general meeting at the golf club this Saturday (21st) from 9am.
