Ugu takes proactive approach to season

The municipality says it is confident that all eventualities have been planned for.

Ugu District Municipality says it has put in place a comprehensive plan to ensure a hassle-free December holiday season with regards to water and sanitation services.

“We have placed a lot of emphasis on making sure adequate resources are readily available, including additional staff, water tankers, vehicles and standby service providers to swiftly respond to service delivery emergencies as efficiently as possible,” said Ugu spokesman, France Zama.

The municipality has also established a festive season Joint Operation Committee which meets daily to monitor and report on progress made on reported water and sanitation complaints received.

Mr Zama said it had been noticed that during peak season, the main supply networks of the Umtamvuna and Bhobhoyi water treatment works experienced extreme supply demand which was much higher than their capacity.

He added they would be on high alert at all potential hot spots to ensure that in the event of prolonged water supply interruptions, alternative measures could be implemented instantly.

About a month ago, proactive maintenance was carried out on a low lift pump at Umtamvuna water works, with the pump given a complete overhaul in preparation for the December holidays.

“Provision has also been made for rural communities which will be supplied by water tankers which will be in service on a daily basis.

” Also, we have taken care of institutions where there will be large gatherings over weekends. As a district municipality, our obligation is to extend and sustain water access to all 85 municipal wards that comprise the four local municipalities.”

Mr Zama went on to say that the municipality’s management and employees remained committed to ensuring that communities received an uninterrupted water supply during this period and beyond.

“In the event of isolated or occasional interruptions, our dedicated technicians will ensure normal water supply is reinstated within the shortest possible time.”

Ugu’s call centre will also be beefed up with additional personnel to meet the call demand during the day, after hours and on public holidays.

“Our operators will be ready to interact with the community on water and sanitation services through our Facebook page; Ugu District Municipality and the 24-hour call centre on 08000 WATER (92837) or 039 688 5830/36, or via our SMS line at 44751,” he said.
