Smooth start for class of 2020

South Coast Herald reporters were out and about, visiting local primary schools to record the occasion.

Gone are the days where grade 1 pupils would cry and hang on to their parents on their first day of big school.

Yesterday, (Wednesday) apart from a few pupils who wished their parents could attend class with them, most were enthusiastic to the start of their formal school career in 2020.

South Coast Herald reporters were out and about, visiting local primary schools to record the occasion.

At some schools the grade 1 pupils were bidding farewell to their parents, all smiles and ready to go to their classes while others were already settling down to meet and greet classmates.

At South Coast Academy, Alexis Martin was brave enough to ask the Herald reporter to view her pictures, questioning her on which newspaper she was working for and how many pictures per pupil was she taking.

The bright young spark said she was looking forward to seeing the final product of her and the rest of her classmates in the newspaper.

For a few of her fellow pupils, the first day of big school was a bit intimidating, but teachers made sure they got comfortable and knew their way around the school.

Fortunately, the days of long queues of parents who flock down to schools in a desperate attempt to secure a space for their little ones is a thing of the past.

At the schools visited by the reporters, all pupils were armed with their stationery and backpacks ready to commence their first day of school.

Although there were high traffic volumes at some schools, and sweltering heat, overall, the day went smoothly.

Grade 1 is the first step into 12 years of formal education.
