Festive season ‘heroes’ treated to tea

Meticulous planning and the strict enforcement of bylaws by the various authorities were key to the successful season.

THE Proudly Scottburgh Forum held a tea at the Blue Marlin Hotel last Friday to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the festive season.

Sandie Curtis, owner of the hotel, and Malthee Singh, assistant general manager, hosted the tea.

Owen Kuyper, who moved to Scottburgh two years ago after being a regular visitor to the town since 1964, is now a member of the Proudly Scottburgh Forum.

“During the past few years, I have unfortunately seen our beaches deteriorate, mostly because of beachgoers abusing alcohol,” he said.

He added however that the last festive season was “an absolute success story” as evidenced on social media and from reports received from holidaymakers.

“The success of this season has made Scottburgh a holiday destination of choice once again.”

Owen attributes this to comprehensive festive season planning and the strict enforcement of bylaws by the various authorities.

Protection Services Superintendent Kevin Govender said they had succeeded in making the beach alcohol-free by confiscating alcohol and having daily roadblocks and patrols.

He added that a zero-tolerance approach to crime was also a contributing factor.

“The success of the past season has been a real team effort,” said Owen.

Special mention was made of Umdoni Municipality, Protection Services and Saps who all played a big role during the festive season.

“The forum thanks everyone who ensured that residents and holidaymakers were able to enjoy themselves in safety.

“It is not only what they did that was good, but the manner in which tasks were done has to be applauded. We received respect and friendliness from everyone involved.”

The forum said it hoped that the fruits of this success would be felt in the holidays to come.
