Hibiscus Food for Life helps feed the hungry

The organisation provides meals for 4 000 people each month, and your help would be much appreciated.

The non-profit organisation, Hibiscus Food for Life of Port Shepstone, has been providing meals every month, for the past ten years, to some 4000 residents in the Marburg, Palmview, White City and Murchison areas.

The organisation’s founder, Rajen Mahabeer said many people in these areas experience extreme poverty due to low income and unemployment. Their most recent food drive was at the Margate taxi rank, where members of the organisation fed a number of people.

Mr Mahabeer said all meals are freshly prepared by the Mahabeer family, and a lot of hard work and time has gone into making these nutritious meals.

The organisation has also recently started a feeding scheme for pupils in primary schools.

“Some pupils come from very disadvantaged backgrounds. Having a nutritious meal was an absolute luxury for them,” said Mr Mahabeer.

“There are also many people from other impoverished areas in dire need, and we rely on the community for funding,” he said. “It costs us R20 000 per month to sustain this feeding project, and we would appreciate assistance of any sort.” Anyone who would like to help can contact Mr Mahabeer at 082 836 2758.
