Umtamvuna Views: Consider becoming a committee member

The majority of the current committee will be standing down.

Port Edward and Banners Rest Ratepayers’ Association (PEBRRA) will hold its AGM at the Methodist Church hall today (Thursday, 30th) at 5.30pm. The agenda will primarily be a Q&A session, some financials and the nomination and election of a new committee as the majority of the current committee is standing down. If you have any questions, ideas or have an interest in becoming a committee member, please attend the meeting.

Vicious attack

Your scribe heard a very sad story in Port Edward last week from an elderly woman who really loved her little Dachshund cross, also a senior at 14 years old. The two ‘oldies’ used to walk down the road every day, but recently while the two were walking past a neighbour’s house, the gate was not secured and one of the two loud and aggressive Rottweilers on the property lunged and attacked.

It picked the little dog up between its teeth and shook it like a rag doll. The poor elderly woman screamed and tried in vain to save her dog. Eventually the dog’s owner emerged, called her dog inside and shut the gate without so much as a backward glance.

Sadly, the woman buried her darling companion and is still grieving. She is over 80 and feels desperately sad and lonely. We all have a responsibility to make sure our dogs are secured in our property – it is illegal to have a dog loose on the road.

Great news

After many months of negotiations, it seems that Port Edward will at last be provided with the two bag refuse collection system. Under this system, that has been operating successfully in Leisure Bay, Southbroom and other neighbouring towns, residents are supplied with clear plastic bags and recyclable items will be collected weekly by the municipality. Considering the number of elderly and housebound residents in Port Edward, it will be a huge benefit to all. The project is expected to roll out within the next few months.

Note the dates

Don’t forget the monthly morning market at the Methodist Church this Saturday (February 1) from 8am till noon. Meet friends for tea, pancakes and a breakfast roll and browse varied stalls.

The community vegetable garden next to the church will also have lovely fresh produce for sale.

Keep your pets safe from rabies and have them vaccinated. Free vaccinations are offered as follows: Monday, February 3 – 8.30am to 12.30pm: behind Port Edward library, and 1.30pm to 3pm: Munster Motors, Leisure Bay; Tuesday, 4th – 8.30 to 10.30am: Glenmore Supermarket, 11am to 12pm – Munster Protection Services, and 1.30 to 3pm – Greenharts Supermarket; Wednesday, 5th – 8.30 to 10am Rock Haven, Trafalgar and 10.30am to 12.30pm at Marina Beach Library.
