Parents warned against cashing in on tragedy

Sassa has received tip-offs of social grants being withdrawn after infants have died.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) warns parents to stop drawing social grants after the death of their infants.

The agency has received tip-offs from community members that some parents continue to cash in after their children have died.

According to Sassa spokesman, Senzeni Ngubeni, the fraud happens when a child dies a few weeks or months after birth.

Parents also bury the child without informing the Department of Home Affairs.

“Unreported deaths and burials are illegal. When a child dies, parents must report the death to Home Affairs and Sassa will pick up that information and stop the grant immediately,” said Ms Ngubeni.

Those caught will be arrested and prosecuted.

The public is also urged to report fraudsters.
