Songbird Raven earns a spot in talent contest
She hopes to be spotted by an international music producer.
A young South Coast woman’s voice has earned her the title ‘best singer’ at the International Arts Talent Showcase held in Durban on February 8.
This accolade means Raven Coughlan (19) whose stage name is ‘Black Widow’ has been invited to the second round of the competition at the Silverstar Casino in Johannesburg on September 26.

Despite being nervous at the Durban event, she aced the 60-second audition with Celine Dion’s ‘Power of Love’.
International producers will be present at the Johannesburg event.
If selected, Raven will attend the International Model and Talent Association’s convention in New York in July 2021 where she has the chance to secure a contract with a recording studio.
“I have been singing from a young age. My step-grandfather called it noise and told me to give it up,” said Raven.
However, one evening while cooking, her singing impressed her husband, Spike and he encouraged her to pursue it.

In 2018, the couple relocated to the South Coast. At her first public singing event in Manaba, she received positive feedback and realised that singing was her talent.
Now, Raven is looking for gigs to get her voice known.
“I want to build my confidence on stage and I am looking for any opportunity to sing in front of people,” she said.
