South Coast boasts 11 Blue Flag beaches
Five more beaches hold pilot status as region prepares for summer.
The KZN South Coast is home to 11 Blue Flag beaches, with a further five holding pilot status as the region prepares to welcome holidaymakers for the summer season.
The recent achievement comes as the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) celebrates 25 years of the Blue Flag programme in South Africa, alongside its centenary.
Nationally, WESSA recognises 62 Blue Flags and 19 Green Coast sites, highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship, community participation and long-term coastal protection.
The international Blue Flag programme recognises beaches, marinas and tourism boats that meet high standards for water quality, environmental management, safety, accessibility and environmental education.
The South Coast’s 11 Blue Flag beaches are Preston, Rocky Bay, Pennington, Bazley, Mtwalume, Hibberdene, Umzumbe, Southport, St Michael’s, Marina and Trafalgar.
Five beaches – Scottburgh, Umtentweni, Lucien, Ramsgate and Port Edward – have pilot status.
According to WESSA, pilot beaches are working to meet all the requirements for full Blue Flag accreditation.
The region also has three Green Coast sites: Leisure Bay Conservancy, Trafalgar Marine Reserve and surrounds, and Southbroom Conservancy.
Marina Beach is also marking 25 years of Blue Flag recognition.
WESSA’s Green Coast programme recognises coastal sites that demonstrate effective conservation management, community participation, environmental education and responsible tourism.
With the festive season approaching, the designations highlight the importance of maintaining clean beaches, protecting coastal ecosystems and providing safe environments for residents and visitors.
