One of those men was also killed.

“The victims were shot in the head, chest and lower body. Both were declared dead at the scene,” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

“The gunmen fled in a vehicle which was later found abandoned at Sanathan informal settlement. Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been stolen in Isipingo earlier this month.”

It is believed the gunmen made off with a firearm belonging to one of the men killed.

Meanwhile condolences have poured in for the Mbambo family.

ANCYL spokesman Teddy Hlophe said they were saddened by the death of their comrade.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, family and the people of the Lower South Coast whom he had served with commitment and dedication for many years.”

Councillor Hlophe described Mr Mbambo as an economic fighter and a leader who played a major role in shaping the interests of young people in the Lower South Coast region.

“We will remember him as a man of courage who was never afraid to fight for what he believed in, even when it was not popular.”

“We call on the Esperanza and greater Umzumbe communities to come forward and work with authorities to bring about a speedy resolution to this heinous crime against our comrade,” read a statement from the YCLSA.

Charges of murder and attempted murder are being investigated by Umzinto Saps.
