Tweni Talk: Don’t fall for WhatsApp scam

People do get caught up in the moment and money is transferred, which is why scamsters keep trying.

Talk about crime being on the increase … last Sunday my phone was beeping like mad with WhatsApp messages and a few dropped calls.

I was being scammed by a person pretending to be Rob Fidler, the Uvongo scribe for the Herald.

I even received a photo of Rob, together with an apology that the phone was ‘doing its own thing’.

‘Rob’ asked me to lend him some money until Monday, as he was in a spot of bother and his family and friends were unable to help.

This scam has been doing the rounds for a while now and obviously people do get caught up in the moment and money is transferred, which is why the scamsters keep at it.

I didn’t fall for it.

Please make sure that if you get a call from a number unknown to you, pretending they know you and need your help, you phone the person first to verify if there is a legitimate problem.

Thanks to all the locals who are sewing and donating masks to those in need.

There is such a controversy about whether one should or shouldn’t wear them.

I do agree that if you are dealing with someone who is sick, or if you are sick yourself, then it is a must.

Otherwise, keep your hands well-sanitised, clean everything you touch, and practice social distancing to stay as safe as possible.

Thanks also to the people and churches donating food parcels to the less fortunate.

If you want to make a difference, please continue to give, no matter how big or small your donation is.

When all donations are put together, many people can be helped.

If you are in need and do not know where to turn, please do make contact.

This is a good time to reflect on your life and if you don’t like what you see, to perhaps change direction.

If you are one of the lucky ones and have access to the internet, why not learn a new language – www.duolingo.com offers free courses.

The world as we know it has changed and now is the time to make the most of the opportunities that will present themselves.
