The lowdown on vehicle safety during lockdown

As our country adjusts to level four of lockdown, Dean Horn, Super Tyres Managing Director, encourages the public to ensure their vehicles are well maintained, safe and roadworthy.   Whether staying home or travelling a short distance to work or to buy essentials, having a reliable vehicle should not be taken for granted.

While you might think one of the few benefits of lockdown is that your car is sitting unused or long periods of time, cars don’t actually like to sit still. Here are three top tips for keeping your vehicle safe for when you do venture back out onto the road.

1. Disinfect your car: While we disinfect our homes and workplaces, a car may often get overlooked, but is equally important. Clean the air conditioner vents by spraying them with a specialised cleaner and then remove and clean the filter. Clean high-touch surface areas such as the steering wheel, knobs, switches and buttons by using a car interior cleaner. Don’t forget to clean the interior and exterior door handles as well as your car key!
2. Battery health: Start your car engine at least once in every three days to avoid battery discharge. This should be done in a ventilated area, preferably outside.
3. Tyre care: Give your tyres a clean to protect from road grime. In addition, remember to inspect tyre tread and be on the lookout for any damage (remember to check your spare tyre as well). Tyres, in particular, don’t like sitting in the same position for too long because the weight of the car on the tyre can cause a flat spot. Move your car backward and forward to avoid flat spots.
