Grade Rs told to ‘stay at home’ by department of education

Only Grade 6 and 11 pupils will return to school this coming Monday (6th).

A decision late Thursday evening ruled that only grade 6 and 11 pupils will return to school on Monday, July 6, and not the grade Rs.

Angie Motshekga, Minister of the Department of Basic Education, hosted the Council of Education Ministers meeting.

This brings yet another twist to the classroom saga with hundreds of schools remaining shut since the onset of lockdown in March this year.

Dr Enock Nzama, the Head Of Department for KZN Education Department, sent a circular to the province’s schools on Thursday evening.

The circular read: “Grade R learners must temporarily remain at home and await further notice.”

“Having considered the reports the Minister has directed that only Grade 6, 11 and R will return to school on Monday, July 6. However, the province has taken the decision to only accept Grade 6 and 11 on Monday.”

The circuit continued to report that since this decision affects all provinces, it aims to advise that all other grades will be phased in during the month of July in a differentiated approach within the stipulated time frames, as per the gazette published by the minister.
