Mthwalume murder suspect found hanged in police cell
The two suspects were scheduled to appear in the Mzumbe Magistrate's Court today (Monday).
One of the two men arrested last Friday on suspicion of being involved in the murder of five women whose bodies were recently found in cane fields near Mthwalume was found hanged in the Scottburgh police cells today (Monday).
This was confirmed by police minister Bheki Cele, who this morning addressed a gathering of media and community members outside the Mzumbe Magistrate’s Court where the two suspects were scheduled to appear today.
The bodies of the latest two victims, aged 20 and 38 were found last week.
“We are deeply hurt because we needed answers as to what happened to our loved ones,” said a relative of one of the victims.
“Now that one of the suspects is dead, we may never get the closure we need.”
Umzumbe Community Policing Forum chairman Lucky Bhuyeni said the news was very upsetting for the entire community as they needed answers.
“Our community is still living in fear because not much has been said by the suspects.
“There are fears that more perpetrators could still be out there and the community wants to know if there was foul play involved in the death of the suspect, ” he said.
