Umtentweni Scout preps for World Jamboree in Poland
Ethan van Dyk aims to grow his leadership skills and develop valuable life skills.
Ethan van Dyk of Umtentweni will attend the 26th World Scout Jamboree in Gdañsk, Poland from July 30 to August 8, 2027.
About 45,000 Scouts and leaders from over 140 countries will attend.
Ethan has been a proud Scout since the age of eight and is a member of 1st Margate Scout Troop since May this year.
He first started Scouting at 1st Hillcrest Cub Pack at age 8. He earned his Leaping Wolf Badge and then progressed from Cubs to Scouts.
For many Scouts, this opportunity is considered the ultimate Scouting achievement, along with receiving their Springbok Scout Award.
The World Scout Jamboree is a gathering unlike any other and takes place every four years. It is a prestigious event organised by the World Organisation of the Scout Movement where Scouts, aged 14 to 17, gather for outdoor activities, education, leadership and fellowship.
Both Ethan’s great-grandparents, Alec and Mickey Stonell, were involved in Scouting. His great-grandfather was the Area Secretary for the South Durban District, and his great-grandmother was involved in Adult Leadership Training.
“Attending the Jamboree will allow me to build my leadership skills and help me develop valuable life skills. I look forward to taking on leadership roles and responsibilities, such as organising activities, leading groups and helping others. I would like to connect with other Scouts from around the world. I believe that attending an event like this will broaden my leadership and Scouting abilities at an important time in my life. A Jamboree would definitely take me out of my comfort zone, and I would enjoy the new adventures,” said Ethan.
