Spearfisherman suspected missing off Oslo Beach – search continues

There remains no formal missing persons report related to this incident and as a precaution a search is continuing on the credible eye-witness reports received.

The search for a spearfisherman, believed to be missing, is continuing off Oslo Beach near Port Shepstone this morning.

Jeremiah Jackson, the NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, said NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew and Med-Evac ambulance services would join forces with the Saps search and rescue services and K9 search and rescue in the ongoing search.

At 5.33pm yesterday, the NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew and Med-Evac ambulance services responded to Oslo Beach to assist Saps rescues services in a in a search for a spearfisherman reported by eye-witnesses to have not exited the water while spearfishing off-shore of Oslo Beach, and suspected to be missing.

The sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn was launched and, despite an extensive sea and shoreline search conducted by NSRI Shelly Beach and Saps rescue services, and Med-Evac ambulance services, no sign was found of the unidentified spearfisherman, who is suspected to be missing.

It appears that eye-witnesses, including other spear fishermen, noticed a spearfisherman who may have been in difficulty before no further sign of the spear fisherman was observed.

“We believe fellow spearfisherman attempted a search in strong currents and they raised the alarm,” said Mr Jackson.

There remains no formal missing persons report related to this incident and as a precaution a search is continuing on the credible eye-witness reports received.
