A security guard stationed at the Astron Garage in Umtentweni has been hailed a hero after he disarmed a gun-wielding man in the early hours of August 31.

At about 02:00, an unknown man entered the convenience store and demanded to speak to the manager. The man forcefully entered the manager’s office and remained inside without authorisation.

On-duty Lazer 911 Security guard, Ncane Chiya (55), immediately approached the man and instructed him to leave the premises and to return during normal business hours.

“As I was escorting him from the store, he pulled out a firearm and attempted to cock the weapon, creating an immediate and potentially fatal threat to me, employees and members of the public. It was a difficult situation, and I quickly wrestled him, forcing the weapon away from staff and patrons.”

Ncane from Murchison, who has been with the security company for the past 10 years, added that the struggle continued for some time, until other security personnel assisted.

A tactical response team from the security company was dispatched to the scene, and the firearm was safely recovered, and the man was arrested and taken into police custody.

A case of common assault was opened at Port Shepstone Saps.

According to Saps Ugu District Communications, the accused, aged 35, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on August 31, and the case was postponed for further investigation.

He was faced with an armed man in a confined environment and placed himself at risk to protect the lives of staff, customers and the public. His actions demonstrate the courage, commitment and responsibility expected from a professional security officer. We also commend our 24-hour control room and tactical reaction officers for their prompt response,” said the owner of Lazer 911 Security, Basil Lanka.
