Spain beckons for bodybuilding champion from Gcilima
He is hoping his dream can become a reality.
Lucky Sikobi is a bodybuilder who has been selected to represent South Africa in Spain from October 27 to November 3 this year.
But he needs financial support to the tune of R45 000 to make this possible.
Lucky was born and raised in Gcilima Ward 7, inland of Southbroom. He has always had a passion for bodybuilding, something he started taking more seriously while in high school.
After school, he started competing, at the time representing Walter Sisulu University, where he completed a degree in B Ed (EMS), and was soon among the medalists.
After graduating, he had to stop competing due to a lack of sports nutrition in terms of being able to afford protein shakes essential for muscle growth and recovery, and healthy food.
In recent times, however, he has been able to start afresh and rebuild what he started.
He started going back to the gym about two years ago, and now works out at Superbodies in Margate.
He re-entered the competition arena last year, competing in Pinetown and Kloof under the IFBB Federation banner.
Lucky won his first show, the East Coast Classic, in the men’s physique under 174cm.
He was then selected to compete again in the KZN champs, where he placed third.
Thereafter, he was selected to compete at the SA champs, where, representing KZN, he won his division.
From there, he was selected to represent South Africa in Saudi Arabia but could not go as he didn’t have a passport or a sponsor.
But despite this, he hasn’t given up his dreams.
He won his division at this year’s KZN champs (in Pinetown/Kloof) and at this year’s SA champs (in Cape Town).
Lucky then competed against the winners of the other size categories and won again.
As a result of this, he was selected to represent South Africa in Spain.
He said getting to Cape Town was a struggle as he pays his own way to shows.
Lucky works as a merchandiser at Spar and so does not command a salary that can get him to Spain.
He would love to go, but knows he needs financial support for it to happen.
He loves the sport of bodybuilding and has seen how it has positively influenced his life.
Lucky wants to take that same ethos into the rural areas where he came from, to share the message that young people can reach their potential if they do things properly and stay away from drugs and crime.
