Margate Airport facelift is inspected

The upgrade began in June after the airport had been identified as a critical contributor to tourism and investment in the Ugu District.

September is Tourism Month, and in line with this, KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube visited Margate Airport last Saturday.

The visit was for the minister to inspect the renovations being carried out at the airport, at a cost of R10-million.

The MEC was accompanied by KwaZulu-Natal Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Bheki Ntuli and representatives from Ray Nkoyeni Municipality.

“We are committed to modernising our small airports not only to allow for an easy flow of passengers and tourists to various corners of this province, but to make our airports attractive options for future investment,” said the MEC.

The upgrade began in June after the airport had been identified as a critical contributor to tourism and investment in the Ugu District.

Work is expected to be completed in December.

The MEC said the province had been inundated with bookings since the restrictions on inter-provincial leisure travel had been lifted under level 2 of the national lockdown.

“We are working with municipalities to ensure local communities are brought into mainstream tourism. The success of tourism will be judged by how much it contributes to efforts aimed at substantially reducing poverty, inequality and unemployment,” he said.

She added that government was working to increase the number of tourism programmes and projects that are led by and of benefit to local communities.

“Our aim is to ensure that KwaZulu-Natal is amongst the top tourist destinations. To achieve this, we have focused on enhancing our destination by improving infrastructure at various tourism magnets across local municipalities,” she concluded.
