Donated blankets warm worthy recipients

Rotarians Kay and Mike Macrae together with other members have delivered these splendid gifts to worthy beneficiaries.

The Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast was recently gifted 72 crocheted blankets from Absa as part of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Project.

Gaylen Gregory, the Relationship Banking and Project Coordinator of Absa Shelly Beach said that staff and members of the community had crocheted their way through 92 blankets.

Ms Gregory is very passionate about this project and is actively involved with skills development in this area.

Michelle Henderson and her up-skilled team of eager KnitWits assisted with the project.

In 2013, Zelda le Grange, Madiba’s trusted former assistant gave Carolyn Steyn a challenge to knit, crochet or sew 67 blankets for Mandela Day.

Ms Steyn realised that she would need help, so she reached out to friends to assist and that was the beginning of the 67 ‘movement’.

Pastor Themba Mkhize and some of his congregation of the Ethembeni Community Church with their beautiful warm blankets donated via Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast.

They have since smashed world records for the “Largest Crocheted Blanket in the World” and the “Massive Mandela Masterpiece”.

Absa wholeheartedly adopted this project a few years ago by donating wool to the KnitWits for Madiba and got their staff, clients, pensioners and friends involved.
