Debt relief available for Umuziwabantu ratepayers

The scheme excludes state-owned entities or state departments.

Due to the negative economic impact brought about by Covid-19 pandemic, Umuziwabantu Municipality has introduced a debt incentive scheme to encourage consumers to settle their municipal debts or enter into arrangement to service their outstanding debts.

There are three options available:

Option 1: Settle your full debt within the first three months (between October 1 and December 31) and qualify for a 100 percent discount on interest charged and 40 percent discount on the 90 day of aged debt on the account.

Option 2: Settle your debt in installments within the three-month period stipulated above and qualify for a 50 percent discount on interest and 35 percent on the 90 day or more aged debt on the account.

Option 3: Settle your debt within 12 months and qualify for 50 percent discount on interest and 25 percent on the 90 day or more aged debt. This applies only if you enter into the 12 month agreement within the three-month period stipulated above.

In a statement, municipal spokesman Bruce Jalubane said the scheme was applicable to all account holders classified as domestic, commercial, agricultural, non-profit organisations and churches.

Account holders must be more than 90 days in arrears on the date of application, he added.

“The scheme excludes state-owned entities or state departments. We call on all those eligible for this scheme to ensure that they fully comply with the debt repayment plan for the duration of the agreement period.”
