No wasted space at Oatland

There has been recent concern that the site will reach capacity by November.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is applying for funding to prepare and proceed to phase five at Oatland Landfill Site, which is arguably one of the best run sites in the country.

There has been recent concern that the site will reach capacity by November. However, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesman Simon April said the municipality was not currently preparing for a new site as “the phases of RNM landfill are adequate and can handle the waste up to January 2021”.

“The Oatlands Landfill Site has about eight phases of landfill space available and at the moment we are at phase four which is almost full.

“Currently RNM is applying for funding to prepare and proceed to phase five which will ensure capacity to handle waste for a longer period of time before proceeding to phase six and so on,” he said.

Mr April added that the municipality had conducted a Stability Assessment exercise with a view to assessing the filling and the capacity of the phase.

“The municipality then applied to the Department of Environmental Affairs to seek approval for the landfilling and other compliance matters,” he said.
