Mamba mia – here we go again…
A variety of snakes have been spotted basking in the sun.
As is the case every year, the warmer spring weather brings with it increased snake activity.
A variety of snakes have been spotted basking in the sun in different areas on the mid South Coast, and many of these have been rescued and relocated by Crocworld Conservation Centre staff.
Two of the most recent catches were mambas.
A black mamba was spotted in the bathroom at the Umzinto Water Works.
The conservation centre was contacted and reptile curator, James Wittstock safely removed the 2.45m snake and released it in another area.
Several days later, a green mamba was found on the Renishaw farm in Scottburgh.
According to James, men were cutting grass when they noticed the snake coiled around a reed.
After the 1.96m male green mamba was captured, James explained more about the species to the workers before it was released in different location.
Before they were released, DNA samples were taken from the snakes. information gleaned from this will contribute to an ongoing study on black and green mamba genetics.
The conservation centre offers a free service of identifying and removing snakes in Scottburgh, Umkomaas, Pennington and Park Rynie and can be contacted at 039-9761103.
