Two taxi operators come under fire in separate incidents
In one case, two bystanders were also injured.
A taxi operator (45) from the Qoloqolo area, was ambushed and shot at several times by two men in Nelson Mandela Drive in the Umzinto CBD on Tuesday evening last week.
He was wounded in the attack but managed to drive himself to the Umzinto Clinic where he was treated before being taken to GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh.
Two women, aged 38 and 40, who were nearby at the time of the shooting were also injured.
The shooters fled in a vehicle which was parked nearby.
The following morning, a taxi operator from Mistake Farm in Umzinto was driving his bakkie towards Park Rynie on the R612 when three vehicles began following him.
“The drivers of the vehicles tried to force the bakkie off the road near the Umzinto Correctional Services office,” said Captain Francis.
Several shots were fired at the bakkie.
The taxi operator was able to turn his vehicle around and drive back to Umzinto while the gunmen sped off in the opposite direction.
“The taxi operator and his passenger, also a taxi operator, were unscathed,” added Captain Francis.
Anyone with information on these two incidents is asked to contact Acting Branch Commander of the Umzinto Detective Service, Detective Warrant Officer Sugan Pillay on 039-9746500.
