6 Ugu employees dismissed for misconduct
Among the charges were failure to report for duty, the misuse of municipal vehicles and disrupting an internal disciplinary hearing.
Ugu District Municipality has dismissed six employees from its water services department for acts of misconduct following internal disciplinary proceedings.
The employees, including two shop stewards from the South African Municipal Workers’ Union, were shown the door this week following a lengthy process that began in January this year.
Among the charges were failure to report for duty, the misuse of municipal vehicles and disrupting an internal disciplinary hearing on December 11, 2019.
On January 10, the employees were given an opportunity to make their representation but had instead chosen to stage a protest outside the municipal offices where they “peppered management and staff with threats and intimidation”, a statement from the municipality said at the time.
According to Ugu spokesman France Zama, formal charges were then preferred, followed by internal disciplinary proceedings as accepted in the Disciplinary Procedure Collective Agreement, which regulates disciplinary processes within the local government sector.
“The disciplinary hearing found these employees guilty of all charges and dismissed them with immediate effect.”
Mr Zama added that Ugu would continue to maintain law and order in the workplace in pursuit of creating labour peace within the municipality.
