Ramsgate by-election: Cast your vote
IEC Ugu regional manager Zolile Ka-Siphiwo said the IEC would be putting all Covid-19 related health and safety protocols in place on election day.
The EFF, ANC, DA, IFP and VF Plus are all fielding candidates in the upcoming ward 2 Ramsgate by-election which takes place on Wednesday, November 11.
The election is to fill the vacancy which arose when Dave Watson resigned in February.
Siyasanga Nkonya (EFF), Rochelle Robbetze (VF Plus), Alan Bosch (DA), Shaune McAuliff (IFP) and Lwazi Khohli (ANC) have been announced as their respective parties’ candidates.

Two weeks ago, the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced that municipal ward by-elections were scheduled to take place in 56 municipalities, including Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, and would be held under strict Covid-19 protocols.

Although the Municipal Structures Act requires that by-elections take place within the legislated 90 day period to fill councillor vacancies, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Electoral Court ruled in June that by-elections be postponed.
This, the court said, was because there were no safety measures in place, understanding of the coronavirus was limited, and physical conditions did not allow for political parties to campaign.

IEC Ugu regional manager Zolile Ka-Siphiwo said the IEC would be putting all Covid-19 related health and safety protocols in place on election day.
“The venues will be fogged, social distancing maintained, sanitisers will be available for voters and our staff will be well equipped with PPE to deal with voters on the day.”
Mr Ka-Siphiwo said there were two voting stations only – the Rhema Family Church and Assemblies of God Church.

To cast your ballot, you must be a registered voter in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality or ward in which the by-election is taking place.
Voting stations will be open from 7am to 9pm and results will be announced within seven days.
Voters may check their registration details by SMSing their identity number to 32810, visiting www.elections.org.za or their local municipal electoral office.

All parties taking part in the by-election have urged their supporters ensure they cast their votes.
