The public is urged to be more safety-conscious and aware of their surroundings.

This advice was issued by Scottburgh Saps, which reports that a recent spike in theft of cellphones, wallets and valuables had led them to believe a syndicate may possibly be operating in the area.

“It appears that one of the perpetrators approaches a target and initiates a conversation while his accomplices gather behind the target without their knowledge,” explained Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

“The perpetrator continues the conversation while simultaneously extending his hand to greet the target.

“While this is happening the accomplices quickly remove items from target’s pockets and disappear into the crowd.”

When interviewed by police, most victims say they did not feel their property being removed from their pockets.

Police encourage people to stay in groups and avoid being alone when out in public and to avoid being distracted.

“Never entertain any form of conversation with strangers and do not display your cellphones and wallets when out in public,” warned Captain Francis.
