High praise for female farmers in wake of International Rural Women’s Day

MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube applauded female farmers for the great work they are doing.

In celebration of International Rural Women’s day last month, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube visited rural farms in the Umdoni area.

Together with Umdoni Muncipality’s deputy mayor, Sbongile Khathi, the MEC visited a farm in Sawoti ward 4, led by Councillor Themba Mtambo, where they assisted with planting seedlings and engaged with female farmers.

The group of farmers also received various farming tools and equipment.

MP and chairman of the Portfolio Committee on Small Business, Ruth Bhengu, spoke to farmers who had gathered at Kenterton Hall.

In her address, she encouraged more women to take up farming to ensure the development of households and communities.

MEC Dube-Ncube applauded female farmers for the great work they were doing.

“Your courage to start such a business is commendable and this ensures your families do not go to bed hungry,” she said.

Other women in the area took this opportunity to display and sell various goods including craft work, vegetables, chickens and eggs.

This demonstrated that in addition to farming, women were also able to provide for their families through entrepreneurship.
