Lifeline for Oatlands landfill site

The community is encouraged to drop off garden waste - free of charge - at the depot inRamsgate.

The thorny issue of the Oatlands landfill site is top of mind among the South Coast’s ‘green’ brigade.

There has been much concern that the landfill site will reach capacity by November, with Simon April, spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, announcing in September that funding was being applied for in order to “prepare and proceed to phase five” at the site.

Jason Biggs of Southbroom has come up with a plan which could provide a welcome reprieve.

He started a garden waste recycling depot in Ramsgate about four months ago and is encouraging the community to drop off their garden refuse at the site off Izotsha Road near Southcity Christian Schools.

“There is no fee to come and dump your garden waste, but we do ask that ONLY garden waste is left,” he said.

The garden refuse is broken down by ‘monster’ excavator and mulcher machines and turned into organic fertiliser.

The garden refuse will be turned into mulch.

Jason is passionate about the environment and plans to establish similar garden waste sites all along the coast, possibly in Munster, Port Edward, Shelly Beach, Port Shepstone and the Hibberdene area.

When asked how he had come up with this idea, he replied that God had given him the vision.

David Hallé, chairman of the Ramsgate Conservancy was enthusiastic about the project, saying it would take a lot of strain off the landfill site.

“This is what the South Coast needed. The community can now drop off their garden waste at these sites instead of at the dump site. The all-round benefits will be astounding.”
