Youth district service centre to open
Ugu District Mayor, Sizwe Ngcobo stressed that the centre should be used solely to assist young people.
The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) in partnership with Ugu District Municipality has established a youth district service centre in Port Shepstone, giving young people the necessary resources to empower themselves.
It will officially open to the public on November 16.
As the closest NYDA office is in Durban, it proved difficult for youth from the district to access its services.
“Unemployment is rising. Our aim is to assist young people to establish their own businesses or further their established business aspirations and access our job placement programme,” said Nompumelelo Zuma, NYDA Durban branch manager.
Resources at the centre include computers and internet service.
“We want to help all youth, not only those in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) but those from Harding and other local municipalities. Our services and products are now more accessible as travel costs are also reduced,” said Mrs Zuma.
Ugu District Mayor, Sizwe Ngcobo stressed that the centre should be used solely to assist young people.
“It should not be politicised, nor see any colour. Young people should not be used, they should be developed,” he said.
RNM councillor, Teddy Hlope said all stakeholders should work harmoniously to fulfill youth development.
“It is not a platform of privilege but one of responsibility to develop young people,” he said.
