Business opportunities presented at Chamber seminar

Keynote speaker, Sanral's eastern region project manager Shahiel Khoosal outlined a wide range of roadwork opportunities which are set to be rolled out on the South Coast.

Small businesses look set to benefit from several opportunities presented by the South African National Road Agency (Sanral) at the recent business seminar organised by the South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry at its new Smart Exchange offices in Port Shepstone.

Keynote speaker, Sanral’s eastern region project manager Shahiel Khoosal outlined a wide range of roadwork opportunities which are set to be rolled out on the South Coast.

Mr Khoosal mentioned that in October 2020, the main contractor had returned to site on the 24km stretch of N2 from the Mtamvuna bridge to Bizana where maintenance was being carried out, adding that this was one of two big projects in the area.

“Within three months, the contractor will be engaging with stakeholders to finalise logistics. Thirty percent of work must be given to previously disadvantaged sub-contractors which could include businesses owned by women, youth or disabled people.

“Small contractors benefiting from these projects will be trained for the job and local labour is sourced as well,” said Mr Khoosal.

The R61 in Port Edward where roadworks will be implemented as part of the rehabilitation of provincial and national roads is another project on the cards, as is periodic road maintenance on the N2 in the Southern region to the Eastern Cape.

“Construction is also underway on the N2 Wild Coast road, and our other key flagship project in KZN is the upgrade of N3 from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.”

Chamber president Rev Lulu Bodla encouraged small businesses to join the organisation.

“Our mission is to support small businesses and all our members,” he said.
