Intimidation and sabotage threatens stable water supply, says Ugu
Earlier this week a municipal vehicle was set alight at the home of a technician who was on standby.
In a statement today, Ugu District Municipality said it’s aware of water supply disruptions from Hibberdene to Port Edward, as well as inland areas, as a result of sabotage on its water systems.

“The municipality is working with law enforcement agencies in investigating a case of sabotage with malicious intent to damage municipal infrastructure,” said municipal spokesman, France Zama.
Unauthorised opening of scour valves has been discovered on the northern and southern systems of Port Shepstone.
“As a result of this criminal act, reservoirs feeding Marburg, Gamalakhe, Shelly Beach and Ramsgate have been adversely affected.
“Attempts by technicians to troubleshoot and re-open the valves to restore water supply has been met with intimidation, threats and workers being followed by unknown vehicles to their homes.
“Earlier this week, a municipal vehicle was set alight at the home of a technician who was on standby duty.
“In the interim, immediate relief supply measures are being put in place to supply water through water tankers to the affected areas.
“The leadership of the municipality is working tirelessly towards responding to the numerous outcries of water and sanitation services from residents while also addressing matters concerning security of infrastructure and that of workers,” said Mr Zama.
